Indeed a wise and strategic decision. As an Airline Veteran for past 3 decades I observe that most of the Indian carriers had tried but had failed due to improper strategy and ignoring the professionals.
I am an IATA qualified strategist from Geneva and Singapore can very well niche out the markets taking the most popular commodity of India. i.e Pharma – across the globe.

This picture was taken at stansted airport. I think it’s probably mid 90s.
The handling agent(which is GHI) operated out of STN, LGW and MAN,they also had a base in Ghana. It looks like the cargo stands as you can see sat1 in the background.

On 24 July, one day after the above story was posted, Cargolux announced it had reached a tentative agreement with the OGBL union on the main points of a new collective work agreement.

We will post details on Monday — by which time we hope there will have been a response by the LCGB union.

David – good summary – what is of interest is to occasionally compare these numbers to what was said in the 20 Year Forecasts. Performance against forecast. My records show that the 2006 20 Year Forecast had 486 [744] freighters in operation in 2015 (10 years into the 2010 20 year forecast) if I’ve read your analysis correctly we have only 196 in operation with 24 planned retirements within this number (total 172). The drop off in the 744 conversion forecasting is even more dramatic with 150 forecast to have been in-service by end 2015 – in fact there are just 44 in operation and 12 planned retirements are identified within this number. To stretch the point the 2006 forecast had 225 [744] conversions in the pipeline by 2024. Both Airbus and Boeing have been de-tuning their wide body conversion forecasts since 2010 but I suggest the current forecasts are still unrealistic. All the best. Cliff

One thing I should make clear is that my comment about pointing a finger at China was not aimed specifically at Lufthansa, but rather at Europe as a whole. As Middle East-based carriers say when European carriers complain about unfair advantages, “Don’t blame us, blame your own governments for not taking aviation as seriously as our government does.”

The crisis may be overblown, but the increasingly desperate actions taken by the Chinese financial authorities speak volumes about the very real fears in Beijing of economic contagion from a stock market collapse.

Hi Oliver. Thanks for the comment. Since you know far more about this than I do (or than anyone else does, for that matter), I’ve corrected my post to show that the old Belugas were based on the A300-600 and the new ones on the A330-200.
